Thrive Culture Media: essays on tech, music, sports, film, and a space section that runs from launch vehicles to naked-eye astronomy, on its own Next.js and Payload platform.

PROBLEM
The writing that is not professional writing needed somewhere to go that was not a social feed — where a piece stays findable a year later and the section it belongs to means something.
HYPOTHESIS
The same Notion-plus-Super stack that carries a resume carries a magazine, and giving each section its own visual identity is what stops it reading as one undifferentiated blog.
ARCHITECTURE
One application: Next.js App Router with Payload CMS mounted inside it, on Supabase Postgres with full-text search, media on Vercel Blob. The editor is a Studio at /studio rather than a third-party workspace, and content moved in through an idempotent import with a validator that fails on drift between the fixtures and the database.
The first version ran the acker.cloud pipeline: Notion pages rendered by Super.so, with per-section snippets served from the brand repository. The platform replaced it in late August 2026.
STACK
RESULT
Live on its own platform. September added 100 Years of Music (eleven chapters, sixteen genre lineages), the Numinous astronomy layer at 62 entries, Ignition Protocol inside the Space section, and The Canon, a composite hundred films built from nine polls.
LEARNINGS
- Sections earn their own design or they are just tags.
- A magazine outgrows a rented CMS sooner than a resume does: search, structured entries and long-form scroll pieces all wanted a database, not a page tree.
